Area briefs: Girl still missing in Gainesville, election eve in Athens

Athens-Clarke County Police investigate a shooting at Bethel Homes: two people were wounded at the apartment complex on Hickman Drive in Athens. The shooting victims were taken to a local hospital with what were said to be non life-threatening injuries.

Today is election eve in District 2 in Athens: voters go to the polls tomorrow to settle a Clarke County School Board runoff that pits incumbent Claudia Butts against challenger Mary Bagby. Polls in District 2 open at 7 o’clock tomorrow morning.

The Oconee County Planning Commission meets tonight, 7 o’clock at the Administrative Building on Macon Highway in Watkinsville.

The search for Maria Gomez-Perez is into its third week: the 12 year-old Gainesville girl was reported missing late last month. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says 70 local, state, and federal law enforcement officers are involved in the search, as are dozens of local volunteers in and around Gainesville.

The University of North Georgia sets August 1 as the application deadline for UNG’s newest master’s degree program. North Georgia students can earn advanced degrees in spatial data analysis in classes that begin this fall.

We have this morning the name of the Lumpkin County man who was killed while working on a tree cutting crew in Hall County: Bryan Abercrombie was 67 years old, from Dahlonega. A second worker suffered what were described as non life-threatening injuries in the accident that happened last Thursday in north Hall.
