Area briefs: race weekend in Athens, Founders Day at UGA, Dylan tickets on sale

It is race weekend in Athens: the inaugural Classic City Marathon is set for Sunday, with runners hitting their paces for 26.2 miles through the streets and neighborhoods of Athens.

The University of Georgia’s annual Founders Day celebration is on tap for today, with activities underway at 10:30 this morning in the University’s Tate Student Center.

Today’s the day the Bob Dylan concert tickets go on sale. Dylan is scheduled to play two shows in Athens, March 13 and 14 at the Classic Center.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners meet in a day-long retreat that begins at 8:30 this morning at the Lyndon House Arts Center on Hoyt Street in Athens. The Clarke County School District is putting out for public review the findings of a committee that has assessed the English Language Arts curriculum in middle schools in Athens. The committee’s findings are on the Clarke County School District website.

US Congressman Mike Collins, the 10th District Republican who represents Athens in the US House, introduces a bill in response to this week’s US Supreme Court decision allowing the federal government to cut razor wire put up by the state of Texas along its border with Mexico. The Collins bill would ban the federal government from removing a state’s border barriers.

The Madison County cities of Colbert and Hull are in the market for a new city attorney: Gainesville lawyer Dale Perry had worked for both cities. He has been disbarred by the Georgia Supreme Court, which ruled that Perry abandoned three clients. Perry had previously worked as city attorney in Danielsville.

A couple thousand dollars in counterfeit cash, about a thousand more in real currency, and methamphetamine were among the items confiscated in a traffic stop in Royston: a man from Florida was arrested. Police in Royston say suspect David Palmer is from Pensacola. The 58 year-old Palmer had been wanted on outstanding warrants from Arkansas.

A man accused of stealing a car and threatening to kill his girlfriend is in the Franklin County jail. The Sheriff’s Office in Carnesville says Dalton Bell, who had been on the run since the incidents of January 13, turned himself in.
