Area briefs: property tax assessment deadline day in Athens, class withdrawal deadline at UGA

This is a deadline day in Athens: it is the final day for property owners to file appeal of property value assessments. Athens-Clarke County property tax payments are due in October.

Today is also a deadline day at UGA: it is the last day for students in the University of Georgia’s Summer Short Session One to withdraw from classes.

The funeral for Banks County firefighter Richie Alford is set for 1 o’clock this afternoon at the Torch Worship Center in Toccoa. The retired fire captain drowned last weekend off Panama City Florida after rescuing two swimmers who were struggling in a rip current.

A 46 year-old Elberton man is booked into the Elbert County jail on statutory rape charges: there are also child molestation allegations and child porn charges for Eric Thornton.

Authorities in Hall County say a third suspect has been arrested in the January shooting that claimed the life of a teenager in Flowery Branch: 19 year-old Elber Romero of Gillsville is now behind bars, charged in the death of 19 year-old Mateo Rizo, who died in February after the drug-related shooting at an apartment complex in Flowery Branch. Police say at least one suspect in Rizo’s death remains at large.
