Area briefs: probation for Royston man in Athens shooting, UGA looks to sell president’s residence

A Royston man is getting out of prison after a plea deal leads to probation: 42 year-old Bo Maxwell was doing five years after his 2021 conviction for a 2017 shooting in Athens. He fired gunshots into the home of the boyfriend of his ex-wife.

There is more talk about plans for the Prince Avenue Corridor today in Athens: the Prince Avenue Corridor Improvements User Group meets at 3:30 this afternoon.

The University of Georgia is making plans to sell the president’s residence: the Prince Avenue property has served as the home of UGA presidents for the past 70 years. The University System of Georgia says the house has become too expensive to maintain.

It’s an Atlanta issue that was the focus of a Tuesday evening meeting in Athens: the Athens Anti- Discrimination Movement met at the Library on Baxter Street to talk about the Stop Cop City movement, an ongoing effort to prevent construction of an Atlanta Police training center planned for 85 acres in DeKalb County.

The Franklin County School Board has rescheduled school district millage rate hearings that were set for this week: they will instead be held next week, with two of them now planned for August 3, with millage rate adoption set for August 10 in Carnesville. The School Board is looking to roll back property tax rates to levels last seen in 2013.

There is an ongoing arson investigation in Stephens County, with the state Fire Insurance Commissioner’s Office offering a reward of up to $10 thousand in the search for the person who burned a camper in Toccoa.
