Area briefs: new role for Oconee Co School Supt, Athens Coroner announces pending retirement

Today is the fourth and final day of the Georgia Gang Investigators Association conference that began earlier this week at the Classic Center in downtown Athens.

Sonny Wilson, for the past 16 years the Coroner in Athens-Clarke County, says he will not seek another term in next year’s elections.

From Watkinsville comes word of a new assignment for the Superintendent of Schools in Oconee County: Dr. Jason Branch will serve a two-year term as president of the Georgia School Superintendents Association.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash of a small plane that went down on takeoff at the airport in Elberton. The pilot, the only person on board, was not injured. The Cessna is registered to an owner in Abbeville South Carolina.

Hall County Commissioners, meeting last night in Gainesville, voted to table a proposal for a transportation sales tax referendum that is scheduled for November.

The GBI is investigating the death of an inmate at the Habersham County jail. His body was found Thursday in his cell at the jail in Clarkesville. His name has not been released.
