Area briefs: last week of early voting, first day of Maymester registration

The third and final week of early voting is underway today, with more advance voting precincts opening in Athens. In addition to the Elections Office on Washington Street, voters can cast ballots at the Library on Baxter Street, the Miriam Moore Community Center on McKinley Drive, the Cooperative Extension Service off on Cleveland Road in Bogart, the Tennis Center on Lexington Road, and at the Cultural Center in Winterville. Athens-Clarke County Commission and Clarke County School Board races are among the contests that will be decided one week from tomorrow.

The Clarke County School Board says Jessie Draper will be the new director of Classic City High School in Athens. Draper has been an assistant principal at Greene County High School since 2017.

Today is a registration day at UGA. With spring semester over, students are signing up for classes in the University of Georgia’s Maymester session. Those students can also register for the University’s summer classes.

The Athens-Clarke County government’s Business Development and Workforce Support Task Force meets today, 12:30 at the Snipes Building on Barber Street in Athens.

There is state financing for water system upgrades in Hoschton: Hoschton is getting loans from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority. Two loans totaling $20 million are for the city’s wastewater treatment plant and a new water main for Indian Creek in Hoschton.

There is national recognition for a business program at the University of North Georgia: Fortune magazine says the Master of Business Administration program in UNG’s Cottrell College of Business ranks second in the state and 35th nationally among part-time MBA programs.
