Area briefs include teacher planning day in Athens, City Council endorsement in Monroe

Today is another teacher planning day in Athens: the Clarke County School District’s new school year begins Wednesday.

Today is a deadline day in Athens: this is the last day to offer feedback on a plan for a pet registration program proposed by the Athens-Clarke County Animal Services Department. The licensing proposal and the fee that would come with it goes before an Athens-Clarke County Commission committee later this week.

The county government in Barrow County has posted to its website the latest draft of a joint comprehensive plan, the result of work between Barrow County officials and their counterparts in the cities of Bethlehem, Carl, and Statham. City and County officials say they are now looking for public feedback on the plan.

Georgia State Troopers were, at last report, waiting for a Barrow County man to be released from the hospital before slapping him with a long list of charges stemming from a motorcycle crash that ended a police chase that happened late last week on I-85 and Highway 17 in Franklin County. The State Patrol says charges against David Das will include felony speeding, reckless driving, and DUI. Das is 24 years old, from Winder.

A candidate for a seat on the City Council in Monroe has suspended her campaign and endorsed her opponent. Lolli Campbell, who had been running for the District 5 seat on the Council in Monroe, says she will instead support Adrian Brown, who is running to unseat Council incumbent Norman Garrett in elections that will be held in November.

A Hall County judge denies a motion for a retrial in the case of DeMarvin Bennett, the East Point man who is serving a life sentence for a 2019 murder in Gainesville: Bennett was convicted of shooting and killing 73 year-old Jack Hough, who was gunned down during a robbery outside a Gainesville pharmacy.
