The coldest air so far this season settles over Athens and northeast Georgia, with the freezing temperatures this morning anticipated again tomorrow and possibly on Friday.

There is an afternoon meeting of the University of Georgia’s Staff Council: UGA says the virtual session gets underway at 2:30. Oconee County Commissioners schedule their next town hall: it will be November 15, two weeks from tonight, at the Administrative Building on Macon Highway in Watkinsville.

An Oconee County man is the new director of the Law Enforcement Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources: Mike England, who lives in Oconee County with his wife and three children, began his DNR career in 1991 in Augusta.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the person whose body was found off Oak Grove Road just north of the Clarke County line was an apparent suicide victim. Meantime, Athens-Clarke County Police are investigating the discovery of a body found in a car parked at the Sandy Creek Nature Center. There is no word on cause of death in that case.

There is a rabies alert in Walton County: Walton County Animal Control says a rabid cat was found dead in a cage in a veterinary clinic.

An animal rights group has placed a billboard near the site of a recent truck crash in Gainesville (pictured) to honor the chickens who were injured or killed during three truck crashes over a five-day period. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals placed the billboard picturing a chicken and encouraging people to “Go Vegan” on Atlanta Highway in Gainesville. A truck hauling chickens wrecked in September, killing the chickens in a crash about a half-mile from where the billboard now stands.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office says suspects from Dahlonega, Loganville, and Gainesville were among the 16 people arrested in Operation Masquerade, a multi-jurisdictional effort to crack down on online child sex predators.
