Area briefs include midterm day at UGA, child porn arrests in Athens

Two men from Athens are arrested on child porn charges: the GBI says 31 year-old Tyler Gibson was arrested in Athens, while 28 year-old Salvador Martinez was booked into the Oconee County jail.

Today is a midterm day at UGA, and it is also a deadline day for students who want to withdraw from Summer Short Session II classes at the University of Georgia. We are today 26 days away from the August 16 start of the University’s fall semester classes.

The Franklin County School Board, meeting in Carnesville, looks at a rollback in the Franklin County millage rate. The Board will hold hearings and could vote on a half-mill reduction in the Franklin County property rate next month.

There will be Saturday funerals for Avonlea Holtzclaw and her children Colton and Madeline: the 29 year-old mother and the 5 and 6 year-old daughter and son were among the five people killed in last Sunday’s crash on Highway 365 in Habersham County. Services are set for 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Free Chapel Worship Center in Gainesville.

Norfolk Southern is doing railroad work in Habersham County: rail crossing repairs will make for the closure of Main Street in downtown Cornelia, likely for much of next week.
