Area briefs include Dem rival for Congressman Collins, new candidate in Franklin Co Sheriff’s race

There is announced opposition for 10th District Congressman Mike Collins, the Republican who represents Athens in the US House: Athens Democrat Lexy Doherty says she will be a candidate in this year’s congressional elections.

Today is an advisement and orientation day at UGA: it comes in advance of Monday’s first day of spring semester classes at the University of Georgia.

The committee that is looking at plans for a Tax Allocation District for the eastern edge of downtown Athens holds its first meeting of the new year, 9 o’clock this morning at the Government Building on Dougherty Street.

The city of Winder is in the market for a new City Administrator: Mandi Cody is stepping down from the job she’s held for the past three years. New Winder Mayor Jimmy Terrell says the search for Cody’s replacement begins right away.

Mitch Murphy says he’s a candidate for Sheriff in Franklin County: the Chief Deputy in the Sheriff’s Office in Carnesville will seek the seat the opens with the retirement of Sheriff Stevie Thomas. Also in the race: former deputy Brian Stovall and former State Trooper Scott Andrews.
