Area briefs: housing talk in Bogart, early voting in Clarke Co BOE runoff

The Athens-Clarke County Housing and Community Development Department hosts a public input session today in Bogart. It’s underway at 11 o’clock this morning and continues through 1:30 this afternoon at the Extension Office on Cleveland Road.

The early voting that began Monday continues today in Athens, with voters in District 2 choosing between incumbent Claudia Butts and challenger Mary Bagby in the Clarke County School Board runoff that will be decided one week from today. Early voting ends Friday. The Athens-Clarke County Elections Board is meeting this afternoon, 4:30 at the Government Building on Dougherty Street.

Monday was a ribbon cutting day in Watkinsville, with Oconee County Schools marking the ceremonial opening of a new Instructional Support Center.

There is a heads-up from Oconee County Schools, telling us Dove Creek Middle School and North Oconee High School will be the scene of law enforcement training exercises. It’s this week at Dove Creek and next week at North Oconee. That explains the law enforcement vehicles you’ll see on both campuses.

Drivers can look for roadwork in Jackson County for the rest of this month and all of next month. Crews are constructing a traffic circle on Highway 332, a roundabout in front of Jackson County’s new Heroes Elementary School. It’s work that will make for lane closures, lane shifts, and traffic delays through August 1.

There is an interim CEO for the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia: Juan Cueto takes over for Allison Mayfield, who is stepping down as head of the facility in Gainesville.
