Area briefs: final exams at UGA, summer graduation in CCSD

Final exams are underway today at UGA, with University of Georgia students who took summer short session one classes now taking their tests. The University is aiming toward an August 17 first day of fall semester classes.

Thursday was a graduation day in Athens, with Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals high school students who earned their diplomas during summer classes taking part in ceremonies at the School District’s central office on Prince Avenue.

The City Council in Watkinsville has signed off on a plan to use transportation sales tax dollars to pay for new sidewalks. Close to one mile of sidewalks in downtown Watkinsville will cost a little more than $200 thousand.

Electric truck maker Rivian, still making plans to build SUVs on a new site along the Morgan-Walton County line, doesn’t want to be exclusive with Amazon anymore. Rivian manufactures vehicles to sell to the general public, but it also makes a delivery van for Amazon. Amazon is in fact Rivian’s biggest customer. Now, after its success with production last quarter, the company’s CEO says Rivian is in the final stages of working out a deal to allow it to sell those delivery vans to companies other than Amazon.

The Public Works Director in Gainesville is appointed by Governor Brian Kemp to a seat on the Georgia Public Service Advisory Board: Chris Rotalsky will serve on the committee that works with the state Public Service Commission.
