Area briefs: embezzlement in Athens, new president in Gainesville

Athens-Clarke County Police are investigating a reported case of embezzlement. Operators of Integrity Foods on Old Hull Road in Athens say the business lost $3 million, with an employee fired after allegedly stealing the money over a six-year period. There have been, so far, no arrests in the case.

A public input session on the Athens-Clarke County government’s consolidated plan is on tap for today at the Library on Baxter Street, underway at 5:30 this afternoon.

Today is the first day of the University of Georgia’s through term and summer short session one classes. UGA’s Maymester session ended earlier this week.

Operators of the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter in Franklin County say the shelter will reopen next week, with the Tuesday the target date. The facility in Lavonia has been closed since May 11 after an outbreak of parvovirus in puppies.

Hall County’s Riverside Preparatory Academy names a new president: Dr Britt Daniel will take over July 1, replacing Stas Preczewski, who announced his retirement this week in Gainesville.

The Gainesville City Council schedules three public hearings, the first to be held one week from today, on a proposed increase in city property tax rates. Hearings on June 13, June 18, and July 2 will be held at the Gainesville Administrative Building
