Area briefs: Elections Board sets voter registration deadline, gun found at Cedar Shoals

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections sets October 10 as the last day to register to vote in November elections in Athens and Winterville: City Council contests will be decided in Winterville, while Athens-Clarke County voters will cast ballots in a special election to fill the Clerk of Courts office. Early voting begins on October 16.

Parents of students at Cedar Shoals High School got notification from the school principal after a pellet gun was found in a student’s backpack. Principal Anthony Derricotte says the 15 year-old student will face disciplinary action after allegedly threatening to, according to students who say they heard him, “shoot up the class.”

Athens ramps up for a third straight football weekend, and this one figures to be the biggest so far: the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs begin Southeastern Conference play with Saturday’s home game against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly vehicle vs pedestrian accident in Habersham County. A woman from Alto was struck and killed. State Troopers say 37 year-old Crystal Thomas was walking on a ramp off Highway 365 when it happened.

It’s another legal victory for Rivian, the electric automaker that is looking to manufacture SUVs on two thousand acres along the Morgan-Walton county line. An administrative law judge has upheld a ruling from a Fulton County Superior Judge, allowing for a stream buffer variance on the property site in Rutledge.
