Area briefs: Dogs begin final week of spring practice, students return to class after spring break

Coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldog football team kicks off the final week of spring practice in advance of this coming Saturday’s G-Day spring game in Sanford Stadium. We are 145 days away from the Dogs season opener, August 31 in Atlanta vs the Clemson Tigers.

Clarke County School Board candidate Mary Bagby kicked off her campaign for the District 2 seat on the Clarke County Board of Education. She’s in a May 21 election against incumbent Claudia Butts and challenger Kirrena Gallagher. Early voting begins on April 29.

It’s back to class this morning for students and teachers in schools in Oconee and Clarke counties, where the schools were closed for last week’s week of spring break.

There is an evening meeting of the Oconee County School Board, a 6 o’clock work session at School District headquarters on School Street in Watkinsville.

The Jackson County Planning Commission is recommending rejection of a developer’s plans for a slaughterhouse: Jackson County Commissioners will have the final say on the proposal which could impact upwards of 200 acres near Brockton.

The Georgia DOT schedules hearings for later this month to talk about plans for Highway 316 in Barrow County. An April 23 session will take place at the Community Center in Statham.
