Area briefs: dog kennel moratorium in Madison Co, broadband expansion in Lumpkin Co

Officials in Danielsville are looking at a temporary moratorium on conditional land use applications for new dog kennels: a decision could come at the July 10 meeting of the Madison County Commission.

The boil water advisory issued for Banks Crossing in Commerce was, at last report, still in effect: construction crews damaged a water main while working earlier this week.

We have this morning the name of the victim of a deadly hit-and-run wreck in Hall County: the Georgia State Patrol says pedestrian Brian Baker was 34 years old, from Gainesville. He died after being taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. State Troopers and Hall County Sheriff’s deputies were, at last report, still trying to track down the driver of the green pick-up truck that struck Baker on Skelton Road in Hall County.

A woman from Flowery Branch is in the Hall County jail, charged with elder exploitation after allegedly stealing upwards of $20 thousand worth of jewelry. 47 year-old Cathleen Mayo was working as a caregiver for the elderly woman who is said to have been the victim in the case.

Governor Brian Kemp joined state lawmakers from Lumpkin County Thursday in Dahlonega, announcing plans to expand high-speed fiber internet to more than eight thousand homes, businesses, and schools in what are called underserved areas of Lumpkin County. The state unveiled a new broadband partnership with Windstream Communications.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says DNR Rangers will be patrolling Lake Lanier this holiday weekend: they are calling on boat operators to be extra careful, with big crowds expected on the popular northeast Georgia destination.
