Area briefs: Cedar Shoals steps up security, Daniell delivers State of the County speech

Cedar Shoals High School says it is ramping up security in the aftermath of last week’s gang-related shootings at a mobile home park on Spring Valley Road in Athens: a 3 year-old boy was killed and his brother was wounded. One suspect—a 17 year-old from Lawrenceville—was arrested and charged after last Friday’s drive-by shooting; two other teenagers—both former students at Cedar Shoals—were, at last report, still at-large.

The Bear Hollow Zoo at Memorial Park is closed for a second day, with crews removing trees from the park in Five Points.

Oconee County Commission Chairman John Daniell delivers his State of the County Address this morning. Daniell’s remarks are set for 11:30 in the Oconee County Civic Center.

The City Council in Maysville says there will be a public hearing later this month, with the Council looking for public input on whether stores should be allowed to sell beer and wine. The hearing is set for May 21 at the fire station in Maysville.

Rhonda Wood wins Tuesday’s special election for a seat on the City Council in Oakwood; Cole Elrod was the winner in a special election in Jackson County, defeating Joshua Sheppard for the District 5 seat on the Jackson County Commission.
