Area briefs: another night game for the Dogs, another candidate in Winder Mayor’s race

Another football weekend is upon us, the fourth straight home game for the Georgia Bulldogs: the Dogs will kick off against the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers in a night game, 7:30 tomorrow night in Sanford Stadium, with television on ESPN 2.

There is an afternoon meeting of the University of Georgia’s curriculum committee, a 3:30 session in UGA’s Brooks Hall.

University of Georgia students say overcrowded buses are a feature of fall semester: they’re blaming increased enrollment at UGA, along with a shortage of campus bus drivers.

There is another hat in the ring in the race to be Mayor in Winder: City Councilwoman Shannon Hammond joins Winder Councilman Jimmy Terrell on the November ballot.

The GBI is still working to determine the identity of a body found earlier this month in Franklin County: the body is believed to be that of Cordell Barnes, the White County man who was reported missing in July. The GBI says it now using DNA to try to make a positive identify.

This is fall festival weekend in Hall County: the 14th annual Flowery Branch Fall Festival is set for Saturday, with activities from 10 tomorrow morning through 10 tomorrow night in downtown Flowery Branch.

Volunteers are wanted for a Lake Lanier clean-up: Saturday’s annual Sweep the Shore event, sponsored again by the Lake Lanier Assocation, gets underway at 8 o’clock tomorrow morning, with volunteers fanning out from 13 sites along the Lake.

Gwinnett County Police are investigating a Thursday crash involving an ambulance: it happened on Jimmy Carter Boulevard near Norcross. One driver was seriously injured. No paramedics were hurt.
