Area briefs: an extra site for early voting in Athens, sheriff’s captain fired in Jefferson

There will be an extra site for early voting in Athens: the Library on Baxter Street will open for advance voting tomorrow. Voters can also cast ballots at the Elections Office on Washington Street and at the train depot in Winterville in elections that will be decided on November 7. Early voting wraps up one week from today in races to fill City Council seats in Winterville and the Athens-Clarke County Clerk of Courts office.

Today is the day for the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office’s Fall Festival: it gets underway at 5 and lasts til 9 tonight at the Sheriff’s Office training center off Lexington Road in Athens. Meantime, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department is in the Halloween holiday spirit, with a haunted house that’s open tomorrow through Monday on Lexington Road.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum, not running for reelection next year, has fired a Sheriff’s Captain who says he is running: Dale Dillow was dismissed after surveillance video showed him entering the office of another Jackson County Sheriff’s candidate without permission. Dillow is seen on video rifling through the office of Deputy Kevin McCook.

There is roadwork underway in Winder: the City of Winder is spending more than $1.3 million to repave seven streets. It is work that will continue into next month.

The GBI is asking for help from the public as agents investigate a recent shooting in Hart County: the Sheriff’s Office in Hartwell says it happened last weekend, when three people were shot and wounded early Sunday morning.

There is a hat in the ring in a judicial race in Hall County: State Court Judge John Breakfield says he will run for a Hall County Superior Court judgeship in next year’s elections.
