Area briefs: ACCFD Chief retires, Oconee BOE meets

Athens is in the market for a new top firefighter: Jeff Scarbrough has retired after a decade as Chief of the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department.

Today is another day away from the classroom for students and teachers in the Clarke County School District: back to class tomorrow in Athens.

Upwards of 200 performers took part in Sunday’s Porchfest in Athens, playing music on the front porches and in the front yards of seven neighborhoods in Athens as part of an event organized by Historic Athens.

The Oconee County School Board meets tonight, 6 o’clock School District headquarters on School Street in Watkinsville.

There is an evening meeting of the Oconee County Planning Commission, a 7 o’clock session at the County Administrative Building on Macon Highway.

A man wanted on forgery and identity theft fraud charges in Franklin and Stephens counties is arrested in Newton County: Wardell McClendon is 33 years old, from Columbus. He was also wanted in Alabama and Indiana.

There are drug trafficking charges for an accused methamphetamine dealer in Hall County: Cesar Arellano is 41 years old, from Gainesville.
