Area briefs: A-CC Elections Board meets, Oconee Co Commission convenes

A special called meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections is on tap for today, underway at 4:30 this afternoon. Early voting in May 21 elections in Athens gets underway on April 29.

This evening’s Oconee County Commission meeting is set for 6 o’clock at the County Administrative Building on Macon Highway.

School Board and County Commission candidates faced off in last night’s Oconee County candidates’ forum, an event organized by the Oconee County Republican Party: incumbents and challengers are running in a primary that will be completed on May 21. Three weeks of early voting begin on April 29.

Greene and Oconee counties crack the top 5 on a list of Georgia counties with the fastest growth in wealth. A consumer website says Forsyth County is at the top of the list that also includes Fulton and Cherokee counties.

Police in Lavonia say a man on a motorcycle crashed his bike while trying to outrun police officers; they say he then tried to run away on foot. Christavier Brown was arrested after a brief chase and booked into the Franklin County jail.

A four-day hiring drive is underway today, with Hall County looking to find 600 poll workers for elections that are taking place this year. Applicants can sign up from 9 til 4 today through Friday at the Hall County Government Center in Gainesville. A Covington woman who works as a nurse with the schools in Social Circle is arrested and accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student: Mary Ann Gaddis faces charges that include child molestation and enticing a minor for indecent purposes.
