Area briefs: A-CC Elections Board to certify results, Oconee Co students win national championship

A special called meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections is on tap for today, underway at 4:30 this afternoon: the Board will certify the results of last week’s special election, in which Elisa Zarate won a race to fill the unexpired term of recently retired Athens-Clarke County Clerk of Courts Beverly Logan. Melissa Metzger and Jonathan Mosely won City Council seats in Winterville in elections that wrapped up last Tuesday.

Family and friends of Marilyn Farmer gathered Sunday at the Classic Center to remember the former Athens-Clarke County Commissioner who died last week at the age of 84.

We have this morning the name of the pedestrian killed in last Friday’s vehicle vs pedestrian accident on the Highway 10 Loop: John Clark was 59 years old, believed to have been homeless. He was struck by a vehicle on the Loop between Prince Avenue and Chase Street. Athens-Clarke County Police are investigating.

There is national championship for Malcom Bridge Middle School in Oconee County: Emi Walker and Hazel Brubaker have won an FFA National Agriscience Fair title in a competition in Indianapolis. Walker and Brubaker, working with UGA’s Department of Horticulture, won the championship with a soybeans project.

There is an evening meeting of the Oconee County Planning Commission: it’s a 7 o’clock session at the Oconee County Administrative Building on Macon Highway.

Banks County names a new Banks County Elections Supervisor: Kelsey Barnes will replace the retiring Andra Phagan.

Amanda Phillips pleads guilty to vehicular homicide charges stemming from the 2019 death of a college student in Franklin County. The 44 year-old Phillips will serve three years in prison for the crash that killed 18 year-old Anna Whitlock of Carnesville. Phillips’ truck crossed a center line on Highway 106, hitting a car driven by Whitlock, who was a freshman at Piedmont College.

The US Department of Agriculture adds Lumpkin and Dawson counties to the list of those under an emergency drought declaration.
