Area briefs: A-CC Commissioners approve property purchase, Elberton man dies in quarry fall

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners, in a special session held Tuesday at City Hall, voted unanimously to pay $2.9 million for the College Avenue property that is home to the Public Defender’s Office.

Athens state Rep Houston Gaines says he’s not optimistic about the prospects for online sports gambling legislation: a proposal for a constitutional amendment is awaiting action in both the House and Senate; Republican Gaines says there are more important legislative priorities.

We have this morning the name of the Elbert County man who was killed in this week’s fall at a rock quarry: Michael Watts was 36 years old, from Elberton. The deadly fall happened at a quarry on Cedar Creek Road. The Elbert Cunty Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

The Dillworth family says it is making plans to rebuild their family-owned grocery store in Royston: Dill’s Food City, one of only two grocery stores in Royston, was destroyed by fire last weekend. The state Fire Marshal’s Office is still working to determine the cause of the blaze.

A Gainesville man is in the Hall County jail, facing a long list of charges after a police foot chase: police say the chase began when 27 year-old Antonio DeNova was found hiding inside a woman’s car outside a restaurant in Gainesville.
