The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office says a former Clarke County Detention Officer has been arrested and charged with having what it described as an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. Karen Amaya surrendered to deputies at the Athens-Clarke County jail Wednesday. The Sheriff’s Office says she was hired last year and placed on leave last month. Upon her arrest, Amaya was fired from her job with the Sheriff’s Office in Athens.

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of Detention Officer, Karen Amaya. Following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, Ms. Amaya was found to have violated her Oath of Office by engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a person incarcerated at the Clarke County Jail. Ms. Amaya is charged with Violation of Oath of Office under O.C.G.A. 16-10-1.

Amaya surrended herself to the Athens-Clarke County Jail at 5:25 p.m. today. Pursuant to the requirements of the personnel policy, Ms. Amaya has also been issued a notice of termination. “The Sheriffs Office has a sworn duty to uphold the law. The trust of the public we serve is critical to that mission. I will not tolerate conduct that damages that trust,” said Sheriff John Q. Williams.

Amaya was hired 3/9/2021 as a Detention Officer. She obtained her state certification as a Jailer on 4/22/2022. Pending investigation, she was place on administrative leave as of 10/12/2022 and was served with notice of pending termination on 11/7/2022
