A-CC Commission session: Link inaugurated, jobs announced, firefighters union vote postponed

Melissa Link, redistricted out of an opportunity to run for reelection last year, won last month’s special election and made her return to City Hall last night, becoming the new Commissioner in Athens-Clarke County Commission District 2.

A California-based company that manufactures filtration products, will build a facility in Athens. The announcement came during last night’s Athens-Clarke County Commission meeting. The company says it will employ 17 hundred workers at a production plant off Spring Valley Road. Meissner says it will invest $250 million in its facility in Athens.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners voted last night to delay a vote on a resolution that would have allowed Athens-Clarke County firefighters to unionize for collective bargaining. Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz, who was not present at Tuesday evening’s meeting, vetoed a similar resolution in December. Commissioners will meet with firefighters in a work session that will be held in May. Another vote on the union proposal could come in June.
