Channel 2′s Audrey Washington spoke to a neighbor, who said he was not surprised to hear about the shooting. Thomas Blake said he has lived in the area for 20 years and the convenience store has been a problem.
“The neighborhood itself is not really that bad of a neighborhood,” Blake said. “The problem is with the Food Mart, and they have a lot of people who hang out.”
Blake said homeless people and sex workers frequent the gas station and there have been shootings there in the past.
“It happens several times a year,” he said. “And in the summer it was worse. Since the pandemic it has slowed down. But lately, (crime) has been a little higher.”
