Former Athens-Clarke County Police Officer Courtney Gale is beginning her new assignment as police chief in Thomson: Gale was stabbed and almost killed in December 2007 while working an off-duty detail at a grocery store in Athens; she spent years in rehab and recovery and went on to work with the police department at UGA. Gale was chosen last month to head the police department in the small town in McDuffie County.
Gale said during her lengthy recovery period that her goal was to not only return to work with the ACCPD, but to eventually become a police chief. She was among the finalists to be chief in the White County town of Cleveland several months ago but was not chosen there. She was selected from among 14 applicants to be the chief in Thomson.
