Area briefs: info session on Athens path, public forum on Elbert Co poultry ordinance

An information session on plans for a multi-use path for Riverbend Road is set for 5:30 at the University of Georgia’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center. Athens-Clarke County Public Works is looking at a plan to run the path from College Station Road to South Milledge Avenue in Athens.

Tuesday was a ribbon cutting day in Athens, the ceremonial opening of the Carr’s Creek Greenway Extension. It’s the newest extension to the North Oconee Greenway.

The committee that is looking at plan for a tax allocation district for the Newton Bridge Road corridor in Athens is meeting today, 2:30 this afternoon at Athens City Hall.

We are still waiting to learn the name of the person killed in this week’s car crash in Jackson County: the Georgia State Patrol says the two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 129 at John B. Brooks Road near Pendergrass, where a car and a truck collided. A passenger in the car was killed; the driver was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Elbert County Commissioners set May 23 as the date for a public hearing on a proposed poultry house zoning ordinance. It will be held at the County Government Complex in Elberton. The hearing comes amid concerns from some Elbert County residents about plans for new poultry facilities in the County.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office says the February fire that destroyed Dill’s Food City in Royston was accidental in origin, likely electrical in nature. The fire gutted the family owned grocery store and damaged other nearby businesses in Royston.

A suspect is arrested in Hartwell, charged in a string of automobile break-ins: the Hart County Sheriff’s Office says Emory Isom is also suspected of breaking into cars in Franklin County.
